Field Notes

Description:

A very small tortoise. It has a sharp, distinctly hooked beak and the noses of the males become bright orange or red in the breeding season.

Habitat:

It is endemic to the Republic of South Africa and is found specifically in the Western Cape Province. Normally associated with stony or rocky areas - horizontal rock crevices provide important protection from predators and temperature extremes.
