Field Notes

Description:

These are a large species of duck with the males measuring around 76 cm (30 inches) in length and weighing around 7 kgs (15lbs). The females are around half this size. The first two pictures are of a male with its white head, breast and large red area around the face and bill. The much smaller female, with the dark head and smaller red face and bill can be seen having a sleep.

Habitat:

The domestic species are on the heavier side and therefore are unable to fly any distance and so tend to stay put. These ones have been living on a stretch of the river here at Ely for several years now.
