Description:
Perennial from a bulb-like corm, one flower per plant, leaves single and evergreen in the winter, withering in the summer. The two that I saw on this trail were only about 5 inches tall. Had to lie on the ground to get this photo!
Habitat:
Usually forest, rich with leaves, they are getting harder to find as their habitat near cities is more used by people. When the flower is picked the plant often dies, as the delicate roots are disturbed when the flower doesn't let go easily from the corm.
Notes:
Found 2 of these beside the trail around Roe Lake on North Pender Island. Please don't pick them! Just enjoy them where they are! Calypso orchid corms were eaten by the Haida people and have a rich butter flavour.
