Field Notes

Description:

These newly hatched Snowy Plovers are about 2" in size...literally the size of 2 cotton balls. They are precocial meaning they are born in an advanced state and able to feed themselves almost immediately.This is a threatened species.

Habitat:

Sandy beaches: Longboat Key

Notes:

The nest is a scrape in the sand. Usually three eggs are laid and the eggs & young are tended by both parents, until fledged.
