crabronid wasp
Oxybelus sp.
38.4971, -104.438
Field Notes
Description:
Small wasp, only 4-5 mm. Note hook on top rear of thorax, between the wings, one hallmark of this genus.
Habitat:
Nectaring on willow at edge of artificial wetland. Surrounding native habitat is shortgrass prairie, which is incredibly dry right now.
Notes:
The females are solitary, digging burrows in sand. They hunt flies, impaling their paralyzed victim on the stinger for transport back to the nest. The flies will serve as food for her larval offspring.
