Definitely not a Northern water snake - I agree with Milk Snake
These two fellows were spotted in Claverack, New York. My friend found them hiding under a pile of rocks. There is a creek nearby, which would explain their species.Thanks! Curiousity sated.

I believe the second one is a norther water snake: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Water_Snake is there a stream, creek, or river very very close by? Nerodia sipedon
