Field Notes

Description:

Daylilies belong to the Liliaceae family and are classified as perennial plants. The height of the flower stem ranges from 60-80 centimeters, and the plant’s full length can reach 80-120 centimeters. The stem is not obvious, and the underground roots are thick and fleshy. The leaves of daylilies are strap-shaped, they can be smooth or finely ribbed, and usually folded inwards along the midrib. They grow from the crown in two ranks in a arch shape upward and outward, called a Fan.
Daylilies have their blooms at the top of a leafless flower stalk or Scape. There are usually a number of buds on a scape, but each bloom lasts for only one day.

Habitat:

Large flower bed along boardwalk in Pacific Beach.
