Field Notes

Description:

One of the most secretive snakes around. Eastern Mud Snakes are rarely encountered by humans because of their habitat and nocturnal nature. They are completely harmless and docile snakes that never bite, but will attempt to stick you with their pointed tails when picked up. This is actually the snake that spawned the "hoop snake" myth where a snake could roll down a hill in a hoop shape to avoid predators.

Habitat:

Swamp marshes.

Notes:

Found this guy in the evening crossing my garden. This was my second Eastern Mud encounter in two years - quite a treat for me.

Great looking snake. It must be nice to handle such a good looking and 'safe' one.
