Field Notes

Description:

Approximately 1/2 inch long, black and reddish insect. There were so many of these in my yard last summer.

Habitat:

Appear to live on/in the ground. There had been a wild plum tree, and hawthorne that we cut down, and the just hung out in that area.

Eastern Boxelder bug

Leptocoris trivittatus

oh when you said "eastern boxelder bug" I realized I had the wrong location on the spotting. It was seen in Alberta not Newfoundland. Would may be a different variety then.
