Field Notes
Description:
This is a large butterfly with bright rusty orange upper wingtips and a white stripe that extends from the fore wing through the hind wing. The remainder of the butterfly in coal black. The other two subspecies (S.e. gadoui and S.e. trayja) are almost entirely black.
Habitat:
Its range includes southern North America south through Central America and into South America to Peru. This one was found on an unidentified (as of yet) plant in the Mindo Valley on the western slopes of the Andes in Ecuador.
Notes:
This butterfly was not only easy to spot, but very cooperative. A gorgeous example of Ecuadorian butterflies.
