Habitat:
Occurs naturally in subtropical Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties in southeastern Florida, although some ephemeral (short-lived) colonies have been recently introduced into Martin, Monroe and Collier counties. The butterfly is also found in the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, Cayman Islands, and Cuba, in areas where the host plant (Coontie the native Cycad) occurs.
Notes:
Always great to see the native Atala Butterflies in new places and spreading throughout South Florida, after being brought back from the edge of extinction. There were at least 4 fluttering around this bush, and I did see a lot of coontie planted throughout the park.
