Field Notes

Description:

A perennial herb. Flower about 5 cm in diameter. Plant size about a meter and full of buds. Long hairless twining stems.

Habitat:

Growing on a bush. Semi dry area, savanna/bushveld.
Commonly spread throughout the Mlawula Nature reserve.

Notes:

Occuring in bushveld. The dark corolla centre attracts pollinators. Similar (but bigger) found in the same area are Merremia kentrocaulos.

Thank you Kate and Eis4Xtreme. It really looks like Merremia palmata would be correct. The most similar one I have found is Merremia kentrocaulos, and that one is far too different big to fit to my spotting! I will change the ID according to your suggestion! Big thanks!

Ah, yes, I know what you mean now kel. I'm not sure if that has a specific name, more than just the petals.

Kel, I think those are the anthers and stigma, in a star shape.

Tina, you know what the technical name of 'star' fused between the petals of this flower?

Probably something in this genus, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipomoea, Possibly a Morning Glory.
