Field Notes

Description:

Dragonfly in the Family Libellulidae (Skimmers). Male thorax and abdomen blue. Eyes dark green to black; face black. Females (like this spotting) are brown with yellow stripes. Clear wings with brown wing tips. Both genders have stigmas that are half-black, half-white. Size is 40-48 mm.

Habitat:

Range is Eastern U.S. and as far west as Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Habitat is well-vegetated ponds and lakes; occasionally slow-moving areas of streams. This one was photographed at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park near Augusta (Richmond County), GA.

Notes:

Primarily a summer species, but may be present in Spring and Fall as well. Food is small flying insects.
