Field Notes

Description:

This heavy-bodied snake has dorsal diamond-shaped light brown blotches separated by thin dark brown bands that form a chain-like pattern. The rectangular lateral blotch has two thinner lines (making a Y) that connect to adjacent dorsal blotches. This is especially obvious in the juvenile. The scales are heavily keeled mid-dorsally. The yellow belly may have half-moon marks on it, the largest of which are concentrated near the sides. There is a divided anal plate and a double row of scales under the tail. Males have raised bumps on the chin, which are used for courtship. (information from "A Field Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles of Oklahoma")

Habitat:

Crossing a gravel road between cattle pastures

Notes:

This snake's left eye was damaged and useless.

Absolutely beautiful pictures I'm studying to become a herpetologist and I also love photography, and this is an amazing combination of the two.
Thanks Neil and Mona. I like to do close shots of scalation whenever the subject allows it. I try to avoid cropping by moving in as close as possible with my 105mm macro lens. This snake was very cooperative... until it was time to physically move it from the road. Then it got quite upset, flinging musk with every body spasm. :-)
Awesome spotting Aaron! Nice closeup on the 3rd picture of the keeled scales... very cool!
