Field Notes

Description:

While this widespread non-native is considered a troublesome or common weed in Georgia agriculture, it's not all bad. It's edible to farmstock and humans, beneficial as a nitrogen-fixing plant, and highly attractive to pollinators including bees.

Habitat:

Native to Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. It has been widely introduced worldwide as a pasture crop, and is now also common in most grassy areas of North America and New Zealand.

Notes:

Spotted on a road-side embankment near a playground.
