Allen's Hummingbird
Selaphorus sasin
43.1813, -124.182
Field Notes
Description:
One of two similar hummingbirds found along thee pacific coast. The Allen's breeds only along the narrow coastal strip from S California to S Oregon, the Allen's hummingbird has a very restricted breeding range. It has established a small year round presence on the S central coast of California and winters in S central Mexico.
It is thought that the two species may interbreed in the narrow strip where their ranges overlap aka southern Coos Cnty Oregon
It can be told from the similar rufous http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/22034078(which has a wider range) by the bright white chest stripe under its gorget and the green back with rufous edged feathers - also narrower tail feathers as seen when the tail is spread. Females and immatures are almost indistinguishable from each other.
Habitat:
Coastal forest clearing at feeder
Notes:
all photos taken through the window
I have both the rufous and the allen's here, but the rufous seems more wary http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/22034078 and I've only caught him once. Earlier, during migration, a female calliope(looking very similar to the female allen's and rufous, but without the rufous in the tail feathers) http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/23107003 stopped by on migration. Thus we had all three here for a few days
