Field Notes

Description:

An adult male American kestrel perched on a power line. Took this last month and found it as I was scrolling through my photos.

Habitat:

A field in my neighborhood. Kestrels have been seen there before (may even be one of the same ones!)

Notes:

I cropped this, so that's why the quality is not amazing.

I agree! Red-shouldered hawks are usually a little more tame. I was photographing one from the car one time and my dad walked up to it so I could get a flying shot, and it just sat there! He walked right under it and it sat there for a few moments before flying away.
Raptors are definitely harder to photograph! I go with a friend, driving, and we are constantly chasing after the buteos...when you get close, they do tend to want to fly away - silly birds! Keep going after them and you'll get some good shots! I always say if I get one good shot in 100, I'm happy!
Thanks! I love birds of prey, but sometimes it can be hard to get closer (like with red-tailed hawks). The great-horned owl nest that I got to see was amazing because it was in someone's front yard in a neighborhood!
Quality is great, Jack!! I think most people crop...and with the colors on this little guy, the closer the better! Wonderful capture! I'm glad you found the Raptor mission!
