Field Notes

Description:

Large (about 35-50 cm), long-tailed and long-legged bird that spends most of its time on the ground. It's brown, black and white streaked, and has a crest on its head. It has a long, pointed beak.

Habitat:

Desert riparian area (dry streambed and mesquite grove).

Notes:

This fellow has just caught his breakfast, a lizard, and has jumped up into a mesquite tree to enjoy it or bring it to the bird's nest.
