Thanks gully.moy. It was on Hardwood. I believe it is X. kauffmanii. Especially after reading: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/xeromphalina_kauffmanii.html
Because of the dense population of these mushrooms I am inclined to suggest they are an Xeromphalina species. X. campanella or X. kauffmanii depending on whether the log was a conifer or hardwood respectively.
