Field Notes

Description:

I was taking a hike through the prairie and saw a bumblebee (bombus) He flew along until he landed on a flower. Unfortunately he was next to a spiders web, a black widow spider web to be specific. The spider got the bee caught in her web, and then made short work of the helpless bee. Afterword he retreated to the abandoned prairie dog hole in the ground and waited for his next meal.

Habitat:

Prairie Dog hole. Semi arid prairie conditions. Very grassy and dry

Notes:

1. One of my friends saw another black widow which was having a grasshopper for a meal.

2. They were out in a un-secluded area which is a little strange for a spider.

3. Very speedy creatures. It attacked the bee extremely fast.

Are black widows supposed to be out in a open prairie?
