Field Notes

Description:

I believe this is some time of plover, or perhaps a Baird's Sandpiper. These birds were wading in the shallows and pecking in the water for food. Mainly White, with brownish backs and stripes of black.

Habitat:

Wetlands in the prairie. Shallow water.

Notes:

This bird was seen at an extremely dry Cheyenne Bottoms. Less than 1% of the wetlands had water during the Spring of 2013.

The snowy is the only plover I know of with the incomplete breastband and black legs. They aren't usually that dark. I wonder if this is something characteristic of the inland populations? I couldn't find a sandpiper with plover markings
