Polyphemus Moth
Antheraea polyphemus
42.0104, -72.9045
Field Notes
Description:
Found this "little" guy this morning. He was attached to my rear tire! Bigger than a silver dollar, almost the size of a baseball in diameter. Best I can tell from matching pictures is that she's a Hyalophora euryalus – Cecropia Moth, Hyalophora cecropia. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyalophora_cecropia
Not exact but close. Looks like a lot of eggs or larvae on her back end...
Sorry for the picture quality - Only had my phone, not either of my cameras...
Habitat:
East Hartland, CT, mostly wooded area in a clearing where my house sits...
Notes:
Large, almost as large in diameter as a baseball.
