Field Notes

Description:

Creeping plant that is covered in short, hooked hairs. Hairs allow the plant to cling to surroundings (including vegetation, fences, animals, etc). Plant produces tiny greenish-white, four petaled, flowers and small seed pods. The seed pods are also covered in the hooked hairs allowing them to be carried off and dispersed by passing animals. Thin simple leaves occur in whorls along the stem.

Habitat:

Cedar Creek County Park, New York. Growing along a fence line next to an archery range.

Notes:

Edible! Leaves and stems can be boiled and eaten as greens, seed pods can be roasted and used like coffee. Roots can be used to make red dye.

Thank goodness there is a use for them! They are the most hateful of plants in my opinion. Maybe I'll just serve them up
