Field Notes

Description:

Very tiny red fungi that were 1-5mm in size. They were cup-shaped and the outer surfaces were covered with small, dark hairs that resembled eyelashes. There were 6 growing on a stump and ranged in color from bright red to orange-red.

Habitat:

Growing on a stump in a mixed forest.

I've changed this from Scutellinia scutellata to Scutellinia sp. after posting this spotting on mushroomobserver.org because they noted that the "eyelashes" don't appear to be long enough to fit the description for that species. The exact species may not be able to be determined without microscopy.
