Description:
The goldcrest is Britain's smallest bird at just 9cm tall and 6g in weight. It also lays an incredibly small egg at just 10mm. They are generally found in conifer forests but given the right habitat can be seen in gardens, these photographs were taken in my grandmother's garden in Suffolk. Happily for the goldcrest this species is not currently a conservation concern but they are still a relatively rare sight, possibly due to their tiny size, fast movement, and good camouflage when amongst vegetation.
Habitat:
Primarily conifer forest but adaptable and distributed throughout the UK.
Notes:
The first and second pics give a good idea of scale with the comparison between the bird and the wooden trellis and particularly the screw. The birds were flying backwards and forwards collecting spider web from the fence, presumably for nesting material then darting back into the conifer at the end of the garden.
