Field Notes

Description:

This invasive clam is hermaphroditic and can grow to 2.5 inches across. They can be found in densities of up to 1000 per square meter. They can be easily differentiated from native fingernail clams by the three lateral teeth and two cardinal teeth of their shells.

Habitat:

Small, flowing stream with substrate consisting of sand and large gravel.

Notes:

At this site, no live clams were seen, but these cast off shells of deceased individuals indicate a population within the stream. No shells found were larger than the coin shown in picture three, with multiple individuals shown for comparison.
