Field Notes

Description:

Blackish/brown fur. Shorter ears, tail and length than cottontail. Underside of tail is not white but brown/gray. 2.2 -2.6 pounds (1.0 - 1.2 kg.) Length: 17 inches (43 cm). Strictly herbivores. Plants (leaves and bulbs) - Cattails, rushes and grasses and aquatic plants. Mostly nocturnal.

Habitat:

Marshes and swamps, wherever there is water. (Bay Lake - Wilderness Lodge, Gardens)

Notes:

There are subspecies of this in Florida. Night flash.
