Field Notes

Description:

The stems are slender, part-woody and wand-like to almost vine-like. They usually form a mounded clump, but may fill in around other plants. The leaves are long and narrow or lance-shaped. The foliage color varies from a medium green, through pale blue-green to silvery.
The flowers are 1-2 inches long and up to an inch wide. They range in color from orange to almost scarlet red and are tubular or funnel-shaped. The anthers (male flower parts that produce the pollen) as well as the female parts extend well beyond the fused petals.

Habitat:

The Sweetwater Marsh Unit of the San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
The San Diego National Wildlife Refuge.

Complex supports habitats as diverse as coastal marshes and uplands, chaparral, coastal sage scrub, oak woodland, freshwater marsh, rare vernal pool wetlands, and the incredible breeding and nesting grounds for a suite of migratory and resident bird species in south San Diego Bay. These refuges help conserve the rich biological diversity and quality of life for which the region is famous.

Notes:

California fuchsia has a scientific name that has moved a lot. For the moment most them have been lumped together as Epilobium canum. Some still prefer the older names that used Zauschneria and think that, with time, Zauschneria may come back.
California Fuchsias have colors from white, pink to orange and red. Gray foliage and green foliage. Wide leaves and narrow leaves. They commonly grow where there is extra moisture in the winter and spring, gradually drying through fall. The prefer cool sun, but tolerate part-shade or hot sun with moisture.
