Field Notes

Description:

A very large, very fat Green Horsefly. About 3/4" long, huge head comprised mostly of eyes. The space separating the eyes signifies a female. (Males eyes meet in the center.)

Only females bite mammals in order to get a blood meal. They are supposedly attracted to CO2, which makes sense- since mammals exhale CO2..

Habitat:

Our yard. "

Notes:

Species name "crepuscularis" comes from the latin "crepusculum", meaning "twilight". Named for the fact that these biting buggers come out at dawn and dusk.

Good to know!
