Field Notes

Description:

'Commanders have a swift and skittish flight with rapid wing beats alternating with spurts of smooth gliding. They are powerful on the wing, but usually only fly for short distances at a time.'

Habitat:

the commonest and most widespread species in the genus, being found in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, the Philippines, West Malaysia, Sumatra, Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah, Kalimantan and Java.

Notes:

I spotted this near the hotsprings in Tawau hills park. I set out my sweaty shirt and boots to try and attract some butterflies. This commander and a malay sailor, couldn't resist my boots. I sat near my boots and just waited for them to arrive.

Thanks Yasser for sotd. It seems this spotting went unnoticed as sotd, but that's okay. I still appreciate you choosing it and your book idea!
Dan, I loved the shot of the butterfly on your boot. It's beautiful and symbolic and a perfect Spotting of the Day choice. I could see it as the cover of a book on your adventures in nature. Congrats on another Spotting of the Day and thanks for being such an active and vital part of the PN community.
