Field Notes

Description:

Black ray with ~ 4-5 foot "wingspan".

Habitat:

Nearshore insular tropical waters.

Notes:

Spotted in drone imagery after paddleboarders reported two rays in the area. The first uploaded picture is zoomed in on the spotting, which is cruising in shallow water alongside a sandbar at the mouth of the Anahulu Stream and is at about 6 o'clock, 7 meters from the paddleboarder. One of its white cephalic fins is visible. The second uploaded picture shows an overview of the spotting location with the ray toward the bottom center of the image.
