Description:

Red-orange finch with large crossed bill for removing seeds from fir, pine and spruce cones. Female yellowish green

Habitat:

at a feeder complex in a neighbor's front yard

Notes:

#3 & 4 is male and female

Most of what you're seeing is the reflection from the bird bath across his neck... but he is pretty bulky all on his own too

It does help to have a cooperative group of subjects. I love these birds. Now if only they'd come to my house

Probably to cool off in high heat(or if at night to get the collected heat from earlier in the day). Our sudden warm weather(It's been yo-yoing between cold and wet and very warm and dry) has brought all kinds of interesting bugs

I almost thought that I saw one! The past 3 weeks have been quite dry with nothing significant . Except that my neighbor killed a snake:( I did not see that but he sounded shaken up. The snake was at his front door and according to him it was hissing at him. I wonder why snakes come up to peoples front doors? Sometimes to cool off? to moult? One gopher came up to my front porch on a hot August day,.

Thank you! This is their second summer at my mom's neighbor's feeders. They are very tame and let me walk right up within about 6 feet
