Field Notes

Description:

A large blackish-brown Spicebush butterfly with iridescent blue on the hindwings, pollinating a zinnia. There are light spots near the edge of the forewings, and orange spots on the underside of the hindwings. It has a tail-like extension from the rear edge of each hindwing.

Habitat:

Found in a zinnia garden near dense woods in middle Tennessee.
