Field Notes

Description:

This is a small short-tailed starling, about 18cm in length. It sports a dark-blue glossy back, wing coverts, nape, neck, chest and crown, with a rufous coloured belly. The face is black, with pale eyes. It further sports a characteristic narrow white band on chest, separating the blue of the chest from rufous belly. Vent is white too.

Habitat:

Seen in Abijjata-Shalla National Natural Reserve, a park of the Rift Valley lakes system. This park is on altitude of 1500m and 2000, mainly savanna and open acacia woodland, with other thorny shrubs and euphorbias; very rich in birdlife (over 300 species recorded) but not so much in other wildlife.
