Field Notes

Description:

Family: Erebidae, Subfamily: Arctiinae, Tribe: Arctiini (Tiger Moths).TL: 20-28 mm, WS: Up to 55 mm. A common peppery cream-colored moth boldly marked with irregular bands of semi-translucent spots between light brown veins. One large white spot on each lower wing. Thorax has thick brown lateral stripes. Abdomen is orange with white fringe and very hairy. Hindwings are white. Hosts: Variety of deciduous trees. Larva in great numbers are pests and harmful to vegetation.

Habitat:

Woodlands, fields and gardens (attracted to light). Found at near porch light.
