Field Notes

Description:

Family: Saturniidae, Subfamily: Hemileucinae (Buck moth). Male. FW is bright yellow. Yellow HW has a red streak along inner margin and a large blue eyespot outlined in black on each wing. Hosts: Deciduous trees, shrubss and plants including clover, corn, maple, oak and willow. (Wingspan is 3 inches - 7.62 cm) Wings are folded closed at rest.

Habitat:

Woodlands. Attracted to light. Found on house.

Notes:

Giving it a little touch at base of wings, it will open wings to reveal beautiful eye spots.
