Field Notes

Description:

This little guy had just hatched, and was about two inches long. Snapping turtles get quite large though, we've seen them with a shell length over a foot.

I found a turtle nest that looked like it had been dug up by an animal (dog-like tracks all around). On closer inspection, I found this little guy having a hard time extracting itself from the rapidly drying dirt. I gently picked him up and put him near the water. He quickly crawled from the egg into the water, where I took a ton of pictures.

Congratulations BlueAppaloosa! Your little hatchling has been voted Spotting of the Week! Your efforts in describing your story are particularly appreciated. https://www.facebook.com/projectnoah/photos/a.10150595289465603.674700.10150120463815603/10157410981690603/?type=3&theater https://twitter.com/projectnoah/status/772714232471228416
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
Love this series! Especially love the gigantic head :)
