Description:
A really attractive and a bit unusual-looking flower - to me it looks like a rocket taking off with a plume of red flames behind it! It's composed of a red corolla tube which flares open with 5 narrow, pointed, greenish-yellow lobes. These were a bit out of reach, and a side view was the best I could do, but I hope I get another peek at some from the top someday soon! This plant is supposed to be very popular with hummingbirds.
Habitat:
Native to the southeastern US, Indian Pink is found in moist, open forests either singly or in colonies of many plants. It tends to be found in low moist woods, ravines, or streambanks in partial or full shade.
Notes:
Spotted along the road in Great Smokey Mountains National Park (there was a stream on the opposite side of the road). Listed as having a number of uses on Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases. (http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/duke/ethnobot.pl?Spigelia%20marilandica)
