Horsehair marasmius
Marasmius crinisequi
-37.8871, 145.316
Field Notes
Description:
The smallest macro fungi I have ever found. (Pic #3). The stem is about the same thickness as a hair and was incredibly tough. The biggest caps were about 3mm wide.
Habitat:
In dark areas growing from heavy mulch in wet eucalyptus rain forest.
Notes:
I put one under a microscope to see structures but it was damaged in transit. Found twice in loose groups of about 10. The height of some specimens was extraordinary for the cap size.
Pics 4 and 5 are from an toy microscope at 400x - 4 shows gills and 5 shows cap outer surface. Pic 1 is a whole specimen on hand palm. Marasmius sp. ...
A few spottings back I found a visually similar fungi (Marasmius alveolaris) which was small but very much larger than these. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/25403040
