Field Bird's Nest Fungus
Cyathus olla
-37.8956, 145.302
Field Notes
Description:
Small barrel-shaped, "hairy", ochre-coloured fruiting bodies seen in colonies. Some of these show a split on top to reveal the spore-sacs (peridioles) inside. Pic #1 shows the opened fruit-bodies with smooth walls and black lentil-shaped spore-sacs.
Each fruiting body was about 7 mm wide and the peridioles inside were about 2mm wide.
Habitat:
Spotted on mixed garden mulch.

Notes:
The little open fruiting bodies looked like open oysters with black pearls. The inner walls of the cups were smooth as opposed to those in C. novaezelandiae, where the walls are fluted (previous spotting)

My thanks to Clive Shirley for the correct ID. This was previously incorrectly identified as C.stercoreus.
