A large, beautiful dragonfly. The females are marked in a similar way, but green rather than blue.

Looks like a Blue-eyed Darner. See http://imnh.isu.edu/digitalatlas/bio/insects/drgnfly/aeshfam/aemu/aemufr.htm.
Thanks for the link. It looks a little like an Aeshna Juncea but most of the dragonflies listed do not have photographs, so I am not sure.
