Well if it's grey with black on the wings it could be a Mockingbird. http://www.pbase.com/birdlady/image/126339825.jpg See if this looks like it.
Sorry for the crappy pic. They don't sit still enough to take a good full body photo. There are three of them that inhabit my Northern California back yard and enjoy eating my cherries. So you are probably correct as to the fledgling. The body is that dusty grey with white then black tipped wing feathers.
Without seeing the whole bird some better experts maybe able to ID it. Too me from the bill and spots it looks like a fledgling, possibly Thrush or Wren.
