Notes:

The bark of older magnolias is fairly soft. And I used to wonder about these geometrically straight lines of woodpecker holes. Turns out the explanation isn't at all mysterious. Woodpeckers create these straight-line drill marks during the course of one visit to the tree. They land, drill, hop to the left (or right, I suppose) and drill again. So ... straight lines. Hmm.
