Field Notes

Description:

Check out the wicked camouflage on this moth! It looks so much like a chunk of lichen that if it had been on a tree instead of the paved path we never would have noticed it.

Habitat:

Spotted in a densely forested area (mixed conifers and deciduous trees) in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, specifically Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

Notes:

Photo taken by one of my students.

Noctuidae, Amphipyrinae, Feralia sp. Looks very similar to Feralia major, but I am not 100% sure. Tough genus. After looking at all different species you almost got a headache of all these green and black and black and green and white, lines and spots... Please, somebody has to look into this one the make the story clear and easy ... ;-)! http://bugguide.net/node/view/768414/bgpage http://bugguide.net/node/view/15277/bgimage http://bugguide.net/node/view/5511/bgpage If we are not sure enough, I would go with Noctuid Moth and Feralia sp.
There are some moths in the genus Leuconycta that look like this...
