Description:

Very spiky caterpillar as in the photo.

Habitat:

Unmaintained area close to a main road in a fairly uninhabitaed area.
Altitude around 650 m. Close to Fortuna reserve.

Notes:

Saturniidae moth suggested.

Saturniidae, Hemileucinae, Automeris sp., looks like being Automeris larra, which is also quite common in Peru.
Saturniiid (Saturniidae) refers to a family, not a genus. Les, please kindly leave the scientific name field empty at this stage. Filling this field moves your spotting from the Unidentified list to the Identified one. As per our guidelines we use it only for the latin binomial name (Genus, and species when known). Thanks Jamie. I hadf looked at that photo and it certainly has a lot of similarities. I have found that things that look similar are not always related but I doubt I will get a better idea than yours.
I have seen some images of caterpillars belonging to this genus that are very similar to yours, but I can't narrow it down to the exact species.
