Parasitic fur
-37.8821, 145.319
Field Notes
Description:
A single, 45mm mushroom growing from a damp earth bank covered with leaf and bark litter. Looking like it once had gills it is now covered with a clean, white furry coating.
Habitat:
Under very tall gum trees in a dense rainforest national park.
Notes:
I was thinking this could be some sort of Hypomyces but after checking dozens of similar records it seems likely that this is more likely the early stages of a Spinellus species. After more time the typical hair-like reproductive stalks, topped with sporangi (sporangiophores) might appear. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_zKDjcLXZBTI/TEz4TUPIX7I/AAAAAAAADSo/aiBWpDUz5… <br>
