Field Notes

Description:

13" long
Males often appear black; actually has iridescent blue-green head, dark purple wings, bronzy green back and breast; long, wedge-shaped tail is held flat, or carried in V in courtship. Female is very dark gray. Bill heavy, long, pointed; eyes yellow. Usually in small to very large flocks outside breeding season.
Voice- Song; short high "gurgle-eek"
Call- Loud "shack"

Habitat:

Farms, watersides, gardens, fields
Range from March to November,
all over New Englandin December through February
Some in southern New England
