Field Notes

Description:

Small fungi approx. size up to 30mm each rounded section, delicate structure looking like fine wood shavings, brown, cream & golden ribbon ring pattern with satin shimmer in sunlight (shimmer is caused by fine hairs on the fungi surface), wrinkled edges, growing from dry leaf litter in sandy soil.

Habitat:

Found emerging from dry leaf litter in sandy soil in north east NSW. Found in Australia & some other countries.

Notes:

Looking at this fungi closely the colour/pattern resembled the growth rings of timber, very beautiful.

Thanks Neil. Must be the season for it! I'll have to look at your photo of this one. And yes Mark I remember seeing this same thing in some old potpourri many years ago!

Two in one day. I've only just uploaded this species myself. Great spotting, KD :-)

I've also readd they are excellent for drying and varnishing as little decorations. Must give it a go. I figure when fully mature they have served their purpose anyway.

That's exactly the right one! Many thanks Mark. Adjusted name. Had found one I thought was right but wanted to hear confirmation from someone like yourself. Lots of small pieces of wood snuggly around them, possibly something underneath although I didn't want to disturb them.

As you say they look like timber. I'll bet they are coming from a piece of wood (buried?) You might consider a Coltricia sp? They love buried wood. :-)
