Crane Fly
Unidentified Tipulidae
15.456, 119.922
Field Notes
Description:
This insect is easy enough to identify to family level, but beyond that it is more difficult. first we can see that it has two wings which place it in the Diptera. It also has a fairly obvious pair of halteres, the little club-like appendages just behind the wings which only exist on Diptera. The very long legs, the slim body style and the tiny head all indicate Tipulidae. I noticed that this specimen has short antennae, but that didn't help much. The pattern of wing venation may confirm that this specimen is in the subfamily Tipulinae, but I am not sure - the wings were in the closed position in all of my pictures and the overlapping makes it difficult. So it is Tipulidae for now.
Habitat:
I spotted this Crane Fly hanging upside down on the underside of a leaf on a Sandpaper Leaf Tree (Ficus fiskei) in our backyard.
