I have not been around that much in South Africa so I dont know if they grow there, (And I work in Mozambique at the moment ;) But so far i have not seen any types of Lupinos in Africa. I will keep my eyes open though!
About 20 years ago we planted a violet/blue lupine tuft in our summer house on an island in Sweden. Today, they grow wild around our house and in many differend colors (even in white, and darker red) So it seems to be a natural behaviour of the plant, even though the violet/blue one is the most common color there as well.
These are the two species that grows wild in Sweden: Lupinus polyphyllus and Lupinus nootkatensis
Yes, that's true, they have really beautiful seeds. It's just I have been reading about the species and there are too many so it's really hard to identify but they are Lupinus. These are in many different colors, in the spot I took the photos are almost 10 different color combinations.
Olivia Chee is right :) They grow wild in the nordic countries and once established they spread very easy and even considered as a weed at some places. The seeds are very beautiful, they look like small bird eggs inside a pea pod. Could be worth going back to the place of the spotting in a few weeks to examine them :)
